- The 1810 Greenville SC census has a Matthew Burgess with a list of children that could fit Carter and Thomas Burgess. This Matthew Burgess looks to be the same person that was listed in an earlier Burke County NC census. The y chromosome match of John Burgess of Rutherford County NC (1850) would be consistent with a Burke County family line.
And John Burgess named a son Matthew - an unusual name for that time period.
