- The 1880 census record seems to fit. An Alice Evans, age 25, was boarding with Coleman Evans his wife and two children NEXT DOOR TO Francis A. Kirk's brother William. Since they got married in Clark Co., I'm guessing this is our Alice.
The 1860 census has Coleman Evans living with his mother and numerous other siblings, including a younger sister named Alice.
If this is the right connection then her parents were Absalom Evans (born in N. Carolina) and Mary Gunter (born in Virginia) but her birth year would be 1856. Absalom died in 1859. One brother would have been Sargent Wilson Evans who is buried in Otisco cemetery. There is a biography of him in Baird's history of Clark Co. I feel sure this is the right family for Alice E. Sargent. Sargent owned a couple stores, a mill and a tomato canning plant.....probably the very one that Robert C. Kirk worked in at age 9 to help support his widowed mother.
