Achilles Burgess of Wake Co., North Carolina

Achilles Burgess (also called Akelly BurgessAchil BurgessAkin BurgessAkel Burgess, and Akilly Burgess, among other variations) was supposedly born about 1720, but more likely by 1747. He married firstly about 1768 an unknown wife whose maiden name may have been Britton or Draper, and secondly Sarah Maynard on 8 April 1779 in Wake Co., North Carolina. He is listed in the 1790-1800 censuses for Wake Co., North Carolina, and may be listed there with his son, Edward Burgess, in 1830 (1810 and 1820 having been lost). He died in Wake Co. about 1833, reputedly 113 years of age (but probably younger than that), having had seven sons by his first wife:

Second Branch: Edward Burgess I

 

Edward Burgess was born about 1770 in Wake Co., North Carolina. He married Morning Herring on 14 November 1792 in Wake Co. He is listed in the 1800 and 1830 censuses for Wake Co., North Carolina (1810 and 1820 having been lost), and in 1840 in Overton Co., Tennessee. He died before 9 January 1844 in Overton Co., Tennessee, having had four sons:

 

1. Andrew Burgess (1793?-1849) of Randolph Co., NC
2. Thomas Burgess II (1796?-1870+) of Overton Co., TN
3. Britton Burgess (1802?-1850+) of Owen Co., IN
4. Edward Saunders Burgess (1815-1883) of Boone Co., IN

 

Fourth Branch: Thomas Burgess Sr.

 

Thomas Burgess Sr. was born about 1772 in Wake Co., North Carolina. He married Nancy __ about 1790. He is listed in the 1790 census for Wake Co., North Carolina, with his wife and no children, but has not been found in any other census. He subsequently lived in Missouri, Davidson Co., Tennessee, and Elbert Co., Georgia, judging from the birth information of his children. He died in Elbert Co. in mid-1808, having had four sons; his will, written 5 April 1806 and probated there in July 1808, mentions his wife and three oldest sons (the youngest having been born after the will was written):

 

1. Sanders Burgess (1793-1855) of Jefferson Co., MO
2. James Burgess (1797-1872) of Jefferson Co., MO
3. Thomas Burgess Jr. (III) (1805-1880) of Jefferson Co., MO
4. Edward Burgess II (1807?-1832) of Jefferson Co., MO

 

Thomas Burgess II is the ancestor of M. J. Burgess
Britton Burgess is the ancestor of T. L. Burgess
Edward Saunders Burgess is the ancestor of W. L. Burgess
Sanders Burgess is the ancestor of J. E. Burgess
Unknown is the ancestor of J. H. Burgess

Test results received from four representatives of this line match each other; they have a common male ancestor, Achilles Burgess. A fifth match exists for this family but it is unknown at this time how they fit it. This family does not currently match the numbers of any other Burgess Project family.
