He is listed in the 1861 census in Glasgow, Lanarkshire Co., Scotland, but has not been found in 1841-51. He died on 3 January 1863 (or 1865) at The Graham Arms, Longtown, Cumberland Co., England, having had at least two sons:

John Burgess II was born 29 May 1827 at Kirtlebridge, Dumfriesshire Co., Scotland. He immigrated to the United States in 1853. He married Rachel Evans on 24 October 1860 in Buffalo Co., Wisconsin. He is listed in the 1870-80 censuses for Buffalo Co., and in 1900 at Winona, Winona Co., Minnesota; he has not been found in 1910. He died there on 19 March 1912, having had at least three sons:
1. William Adam Burgess, also called Adam William Burgess (1863-1928); he married Margaret Evangeline Fox on 17 November, 1887 in Brookings Co., Dakota Territory, and died in a car accident on 9 May 1928 in Arlington Co., SD
2. George E. Burgess (1865?-1880+) of Buffalo Co., WI
3. John Burgess (1878?-1880+) of Buffalo Co., WI
