Edward Burgess was born by 1734, possibly in Prince George?s Co., Maryland (he had to have been 21 years of age in 1755). He married Margaret __ by 1755. He is listed on the first 1767 tithables list of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia (the county was created from Halifax Co. on 1 June 1767), on the 1777 Oath of Allegiance list there, and on the 7 November 1785 Pittsylvania petition to the Virginia Assembly against an assessment for religious teaching. He is listed on the personal property tax records of Pittsylvania Co. from 1782-1801, and also appears on the 1782-1813 land tax records there with 270 acres (from 1799 with 258 acres). He died there about 1802, when his estate is recorded on the personal property tax lists; but his will, which was written on 23 January 1799, was not probated until 17 January 1814, presumably after the death of his widow. In his will, Edward Burgess mentions five daughters, including Sarah Burgess (1761-1840), who married her presumed cousin, Elias Burgess (see William Burgess of Montgomery Co., Maryland), Mary Clark, Jane Prewett, Milly Wilson, and Virlinna Burgess, as well as five sons:

First Branch: Benjamin Burgess Sr.

 

Benjamin Burgess Sr. was born by 1756 in Virginia (he had to have been 21 years of age in 1777). He married Virlinda Stimpson on 17 December 1782 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. He is recorded on the 1777 Oath of Allegiance list in Pittsylvania Co., on the personal property tax lists there from 1782-1821, and on the land tax lists there from 1793-1824.  He is also listed on the 1820 census there with one son under the age of 10, one aged 16-18, and four daughters aged 16-26 (the 1790-1810 censuses are lost). He died there on 7 May 1824, having had four sons:

Second Branch: Mordecai Burgess

 

Mordecai Burgess, also called Mordica Burgess, was born on 5 November 1763 in Virginia. He married Mary Brandon on 25 October 1790 in Halifax Co., Virginia. He is listed on the 7 November 1785 Pittsylvania petition to the Virginia Assembly against an assessment for religious teaching, on the 1787-88 personal property tax lists of Pittsylvania Co., on the 1789 tax list of Halifax Co., Virginia, and on the 1803 tax list of the Gloucester District, Caswell Co., North Carolina (just across the state line from Pittsylvania Co., Virginia), but has not been found in any census record; his widow is listed as head of the family in the 1810 census for Caswell Co. He is mentioned in an April 1798 court record there as registering a cattle ear mark. He bought goods from the estate sale of Thomas Langley there on 18 August 1803, and is noted as owing a debt to the estate of Joshua Richmond for schooling his children on 6 December 1806. He died on 13 June 1807 in Caswell Co., North Carolina; his will, written on 10 June 1807, was probated in July 1807; it mentions three sons and three daughters: Elinor, Elizabeth, William, John, Joseph, and Jenny:

Third Branch: James Burgess

 

James Burgess was born about 1768 in Virginia. He married Mary Carson on 26 November 1792 in Campbell Co., Virginia. He is listed in the 1798, 1802-03, 1806, and 1808 tax lists of Franklin Co., GA (the 1790-1810 censuses having been lost), and in the 1820 census for Williamson Co., Tennessee, with two sons aged 10-16, one aged 16-26, and four daughters; his widow appears there as head of the family in 1830. He died on 4 February 1830 in Williamson Co., Tennessee, having had four sons:

Fourth Branch: John M. Burgess Sr.

 

John M. Burgess Sr. (also called John Milton Burgess Sr.) was born about 1775 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. He married Mary Cox on 28 March 1795 in Caswell Co., North Carolina. He is listed on the 1798, 1800, 1802, 1806-08, 1811, and 1818-19 tax lists of Franklin Co., Georgia, and on the 1830 census there (the 1800-20 censuses having been lost). He died there on 16 November 1838, having had seven sons:

Edward Burgess II was born about 1798, probably in Franklin Co., Georgia. He married Elizabeth __ about 1823. He is listed in the 1830 census for Habersham Co., Georgia, in 1840 in Lumpkin Co., Georgia, in 1850 in Cherokee Co., Georgia, and in 1860-80 in Milton Co., Georgia. He died there in 1881, having had five sons:

 

1. Rev. Thomas Burgess (1824-1899) of Forsyth Co., GA; he was a Baptist minister who married Sophia Williams

Fifth Branch: William Burgess I

 

William Burgess I was born about 1778 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. He married firstly Nancy Lewis on 15 January 1810 in Pittsylvania Co., and secondly Elizabeth Day on 22 March 1824 in Surry (now Yadkin) Co., North Carolina. He is listed on the personal property tax lists of Pittsylvania Co. from about 1799-1818, on the land tax lists there from 1799-1800 and 1814-18, and on the 1820-50 censuses for Surry (now Yadkin) Co., North Carolina (the 1800-10 censuses for Pittsylvania Co. having been lost). He died in Yadkin Co. in June of 1854, having had eight sons, two by his first wife, and six by his second:

He died in Pickens Co. after 1880, having had three sons:
