Henry Burgess

James Burgess of Fayette Co., (West) Virginia

James Burgess was born about 1790 in Virginia. He may be the same individual as James McDaniel, possibly a natural son of James Smith McDaniel and Mary Burgess, the daughter of William Burgess of Bedford Co., VA (see that family), who was bound to John Grant in 1791 in Bedford Co., VA; and/or the same person as the James Burgess, presumed brother of Keziah Burgess (see that family), who was bound to John Nichols, Sr. (the same individual to whom Keziah was bound in 1791) in 1795 in Bedford Co., VA.

James married Rachel Huddleston on 27 October 1810 in Bedford Co., Virginia. He is listed there as unmarried in the 1810 census, and in the personal property tax records there from 1811-18, sometimes associated with a William Burgess, a likely cousin or brother. He may be listed in the 1820 census for Bedford Co. and also possibly in Kanawha Co., (West) Virginia; he is listed in 1830 in Logan Co., (West) Virginia, and in the 1840-50 censuses for Fayette Co., (West) Virginia, but does not appear actually to have moved between 1820-50 (the counties were split off from each other in succession). He is not the son of Thomas Burgess of Logan Co., the youngest son of William Burgess of Bedford Co., Virginia, as has sometimes been speculated. James Burgess died in Fayette Co. in 1852, having had at least six sons:

4. Jackson Burgess (1833-1860+) of Fayette Co., WV

Allen Burgess is the ancestor of D. K. Burgess;
Henry Burgess is the ancestor of K. E. Burgess.

Test results received from two representatives in this line match each other; they have a common male ancestor, James Burgess. They do not currently match the numbers of any other Burgess Project family.
