He married Jean Greig (or Jane Greig) on 3 February 1793 at Glenbervie Parish, Kincardineshire Co., Scotland. In March 1802 he was living in Johnshaven, Benholm Parish, Kincardineshire Co. Listed in the 1841 census for Marykirk, Kincardineshire Co., Scotland. His son states in his 1887 death record that John Sr. was a crofter (farmer), but he also worked as a sawyer. He died at an unknown date, having had at least one son:

He is listed in the 1841-81 censuses for Montrose, Angus Co. He bought land in 1849 on the Links of Montrose on Wellington Place. He worked as a contractor and sawyer. He died there on 26 December 1887, having had at least five sons:
