Emanuel B. Burgess was born about 1823 in Union Dist./Co., South Carolina, possibly the son of Joseph Burgess and Elizabeth __. He married firstly Jane __ about 1845, secondly Amanda Williams about 1871, and thirdly Rebecca __ by 1880. He is listed in the 1850-70 censuses for Union Co., South Carolina, and in 1880 in Spartanburg Co., South Carolina (he states there that both of his parents were born in South Carolina). He died in South Carolina between 1880-1900, having had eight sons, seven by his first wife, and one by his second:
