John Burgess of Hart Co., Georgia

John Burgess was born by 1847 (he had to have been 21 in 1868), possibly in Georgia. He married Mary F. Sammons on 23 January 1868 in Hart Co, Georgia; she was born in 1851 in Georgia, the daughter of Oliver Sammons or Salmonds and Elizabeth Cleveland; she remarried General Jasper Baker on 11 November 1871 in Morgan Co. and had further children by him. He has not been identified in any census record. John died or they were divorced by 1870, when Mary appears with her mother, Elizabeth Sammons, in the census for Morgan Co., Alabama.  John Burgess may have been one of the John Burgesses listed in the 1860 census for Franklin Co., Georgia (a neighboring county), or in Anderson Co., South Carolina (across the river from Hart Co.). He had one known son:

Perry Frank Asbury Burgess (also called Frank Burgess) was born on 9 December 1868 in Hart Co., Georgia. He married Mildred Velma Howard on 15 February 1909 in Clay Co., Arkansas. He is listed with his grandmother in the 1870 census for Morgan Co., Alabama, as ?Asbery Sammons,? aged 2 years. He has not been found in the 1880-1900 censuses. He is listed in the 1910 census for Dunklin Co., Missouri as ?Millen Verges,? in 1920 in Stoddard Co., Missouri, and in 1930 in St. Louis Co., Missouri. His census records indicate variously that his parents were born in Arkansas or Georgia. Frank Burgess died on 2 August 1948 in Stoddard Co., Missouri; his death certificate states he was born in 1870 in Alabama. He had three sons:

1. Howard B. Burgess (1916-1981) of Fresno Co., CA
2. John ?Jack? Burgess (II) (1919-1994) of Lane Co., OR
3. Gerald Robert Burgess (1922-1982) of Stoddard Co., MO

Gerald Robert Burgess is the ancestor of G. R. Burgess.

Test results received from one representative in this line do not currently match the numbers of any other Burgess Project family. However, they do match a descendant of William Mellard of Dorchester Co., South Carolina; they likely have a common male ancestor, name unknown.
