He may be listed in the 1841 census at Prestbury, Bollington, Macclesfield, Cheshire Co., England; his widow is listed there with her son John Jr. in 1851. If the 1841 listing is that of John Sr., then he died in Cheshire Co. in the 1840s, having had at least one son:

He married Charlotte Fisher (an Irishwoman) on 10 April 1836 in Lancashire Co., England. He is listed in the 1841 census for Salford, Lancashire Co., and in 1851 (on March 30) at Sutton, Cheshire Co., England. He immigrated with his family to New Zealand on the ship Lady Nugent, sailing from Plymouth, England, on 28 May 1851. He and his family settled first at Riccarton Bush, near Christchurch, New Zealand, and then at Clarkville, Kaiapoi, North Canterbury Region, South Island, New Zealand. He died there on 19 July 1892, having had three sons:
