Benjamin Burgess was born about 1786 in Nova Scotia, Canada. He settled in New Brunswick, Canada, in 1824, according to the 1851 census. He married Lydia McCumber on 24 December 1828 at St. Martins, Saint John Co., New Brunswick, and secondly Jane Fletcher on 20 October 1842 at St. Martins. He is listed in 1851 census for the Greer Settlement, Saint John Co., New Brunswick. He probably died in Saint John Co. shortly thereafter, having had at least four sons, three by his first wife, and one by his second:

Third Branch: John Burgess

John Burgess was born about 1842 in Saint John Co., New Brunswick, Canada. He married Rebecca Margaret Ray on 21 December 1872 in Kings Co., New Brunswick, Canada. He is listed in the 1880 census for Lapeer Co., Michigan. He apparently died there between 1887-94, having had three sons:

1. William John Burgess (1877-1921)
2. George Ray Burgess (1882-1976)
3. Charles E. Burgess (1884- )

George Ray Burgess is the ancestor of E. J. Burgess.

Test results received from one representative of this line match those of descendants of Thomas Burgess of Barnstable Co., Massachusetts, Josiah Burgess of Monroe Co., New York, and Thomas Burgess of York Co., Ontario, Canada; they have a common Burgess ancestor, name unknown. However, they do not currently match the numbers of any other Burgess Project family.
