A SETTLEMENT DEED OF
JOHN BURGESS
(Putnam County Deed Book #L, p. 658)

Know all men by these presents that I John Burgess of the County of Putnam and State of Indiana am held and firmly bound unto Shelton Burgess in the penal sum of one thousand dollars the payment whereof well and truly to be made I bind myself and my heirs firmly by these presents sealed with my seal this 8th day of September A.D. 1843. The condition of this bond is such that that [sic] whereas the said John Burgess has this day sold unto the said Shelton Burgess the following tract of Land, to wit, the north half of the east half of the South East quarter of Section twelve in Township Fourteen North of Range four West for the sum of $200 dollars the express understanding between the parties in this bond is that this bond is not to force a conveyance from the said John Burgess to the said Shelton Burgess for said tract of land during the lifetime of the said John Burgess but on the contrary is only to be binding on the heirs at law of the [said] John Burgess to make a conveyance by warranty deed to the said Shelton Burgess after the natural death of said John Burgess. Now if the said conveyance shall be made to the said Shelton Burgess as aforesaid and according to the agreement of the parties to this bond as above stated then this obligation to be void else to remain in full force in law.
