Obituary of Carroll V. Burgess from "The Virginian"
"Carroll V. Burgess, member of a well-known Culpeper family, and prominently identified with the cattle
business in this section, died of an acute heart attack about one o'clock, Tuesday, October 6th. Mr. Burgess,
who had experienced a slight attack about a week ago, had seemed to have entirely recovered, and on Monday
accompanied a truckload of cattle to the Baltimore market, making the journey on Hoffman's truck of Brightwood.
He returned on Monday to his home at Reva, where he spent the night, and on Tuesday morning, in
company with Reynolds Fraser, an employee, came to Culpeper in his car, stopping for a conversation with
Russell Yowell, near Gaines Run. While talking with Mr. Yowell, he complained of feeling very badly, and
came on to Culpeper, going at once to his room at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Davies, on East Street.
Reynolds Fraser, who was with him, states that he did not realize that Mr. Burgess was in such a serious condition,
but at his request sent at once for a doctor. Drs. J. L. Stringfellow and Grandville Eastham answered
the call, finding Mr. Burgess conscious when they entered the room, but he died within a few minutes. This
sudden death has been a shock to the entire community, where he was well-known since his boyhood, and
where he has a large circle of relatives and friends. He was the only son of Mrs. Carrie Burgess and the late
Walter Burgess of Reva, and is survived by his mother and sisters, Mrs. Bessie Spilman and Mrs. Peter Booth
Pullman of Alexandria, and Mrs. George Eggborn of Eggbornsville. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Edward
Turner of Richmond. The funeral will be held today, Thursday, at two o'clock, at the graveside at
Fairview Cemetery."?The Virginian, 8 Oct. 1936.
